A Brief History of Bonnie

The Mo-BowlTM was designed for our Golden Retriever, Bonnie, who came along with us in the car, truck, Jeep, or boat whenever possible. We always said this about Bonnie: "The thing she hated most was being left behind".

All the photos of the old, white-faced Golden on our web site (except the photo of Bailey on the home page) are Bonnie.

Sometimes she would have so much fun traveling with us that she would fall asleep in the back of the Jeep, with her head in the seat back pocket!

She did this several times, and we would need to wake her after arriving home, one time taking pictures first.

We adopted Bonnie when she was 8 months old in October, 1993. She died in April 2008 at 15 years, 2 months. We had many wonderful years with her, but no matter how many, they never seem enough.

We always planned our vacations around Bonnie. We rented dog friendly cottages or stayed in dog friendly inns in New Hampshire, and then took her with us canoeing, fishing, hiking, or whatever the season had to offer.

She was part of our family and leaving her behind was never an option.

We delayed taking a long distance vacation (requiring air travel and leaving Bonnie home), thinking we'd go after Bonnie died and before we found another dog.

But you know what they say about "the best laid plans". Three days after she died, with an unbearably empty house and lonely hearts, we started looking for another dog.

We first considered adopting a Golden, but the rescue league required a fenced-in back yard. Living deep in the woods, fences don't make sense unless one is raising livestock.

While we understand the reason for the rescue league's policy, this was not going to be an option for us. We decided to look for a puppy.

We found Southern Cross Goldens, a breeder in Tamworth, NH, with a litter from their beautiful Golden, Polly, a "Baby Puppy Champion" (8 Best Baby Puppy in Group Awards, 6 Best Baby Puppy in Show awards).

Polly was beautiful and very affectionate, and took to us immediately.

We chose her pup "Blue Girl", a mischievous puppy who snuck up behind me and tugged at my belt loop while I was playing with the other pups. She seemed to have the strong will and attitude we preferred, and happened to be very similar in color to Bonnie.

All the pictures of the young Golden (except Bailey) are Sally.

Although she will never replace Bonnie, she will carry on as the cover girl for the Mo-BowlTM...
